“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Trim your moustaches closely and let your beards grow.’” This is al-Bukhārī’s wording; Muslim’s version reads, “Clip the moustaches closely and let the beards grow.”
The two Ṣaḥīḥs likewise record from Ibn ʿUmar ﵄ that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Differ from the polytheists: let the beard flow freely and clip the moustache closely.”
Mālik in al-Muwaṭṭaʾ, together with Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, and al-Tirmidhī, relate from Ibn ʿUmar ﵄ that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ “commanded that the moustache be clipped and the beard allowed to grow.” Al-Tirmidhī remarked, “This ḥadīth is sound and authentic.”
In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Abū Hurayrah ﵁ reports that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Shorten the moustache and grow the beard; differ from the Magians.” Imām Aḥmad also recorded it in abridged form: “Trim the moustache and let the beard grow.”
Al-Bukhārī cites it in al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr with the wording that the Prophet ﷺ said, “The Magians let their moustaches grow long and shave their beards, so differ from them: trim your moustaches and leave your beards.”
Al-Bazzār transmits from Anas ﵁ that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Oppose the Magians: shorten the moustache and leave the beard abundant.”
Al-Bayhaqī relates from Ibn ʿUmar ﵄ that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned the Magians and said, “They grow out their sabāl—that is, the moustache—and shave their beards, so differ from them.”
There is a great multitude of ḥadīths commanding that the beard be left and the moustache closely trimmed. Imām Aḥmad, Muslim, and the compilers of the Sunan also report from ʿĀʾishah, may Allah be pleased with her
