Section: The author’s claim that the Prophet’s instruction to trim the mustaches, grow the beards, and honor them was merely because he ﷺ found thick beards irritating
The writer of the spurious article said: “All there is to the matter is that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—disliked the sight of a bushy beard and felt uneasy about it, so he said, ‘Trim the mustaches and honor the beards.’ Honor them, meaning: neaten them, tidy them, comb them—not ‘leave them uncut,’ for they are already naturally grown.”
Our reply is as follows: His assertion that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—disliked seeing a full beard and was disturbed by it is sheer fabrication against the Prophet. It is mass-transmitted that he said, “Whoever deliberately lies about me, let him take his seat in the Fire.” The Prophet used to command that the beard be allowed to grow and be kept plentiful, and he forbade imitating the Magians who shaved their beards. He himself had a thick, substantial beard that filled his upper chest. It is also related that he disliked looking at the two Magians who entered upon him with their beards shaved and their mustaches left long, and that he reproved them for it. After this, could any rational person maintain that the Prophet disliked the sight of a thick beard and was disturbed by it?
