As for their assertion, “This—along with other such passages—is found in the books of our enemies, the Jews,” the answer is as follows: There is no doubt that the Jews disagree with you over how those scriptures should be read. You interpret them one way, they interpret them another, and it is perfectly possible that both readings are wrong. In that case we say to you: Just as the prophetic books testify to the Messiah and to his religion—despite the Jews’ contrary interpretation—so too do they testify to Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and to his community, even though the People of the Book differ over how to interpret them. Indeed, God has set forth the description of Muhammad and of his community in numerous places within the writings of the prophets.
Whenever nations dispute over the meaning of the scriptures, it is obligatory to determine the truth established by both revealed and rational evidence. When this is done, it becomes clear that you have interpreted God’s books in ways that contradict His intent concerning the doctrines of the Trinity, incarnation, and the like—just as the Jews did with their own interpretations. The details of this have been set out at length elsewhere.
