The Divergence of the People of the Book Concerning the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace
The point at hand is that the divisions found among the People of the Book with respect to the Prophet—each faction making about him a claim that contradicts the claim of another—mirror the divisions of all other unbelievers. For it is the habit of those who reject the prophets that every group articulates a view that clashes with the view of the next; the same holds true for their statements about the Scripture revealed to him. All of those statements are inconsistent and false.
This is the blameworthy disagreement that Allah, Exalted is He, refers to when He says:
“But they will not cease to differ—except those upon whom your Lord has mercy” (Hud 11:118),
and in His saying:
“Indeed, you are mired in contradictory speech; only the one who is deluded is turned away from it” (al-Dhariyat 51:8),
and His saying:
“Those who differed concerning the Scripture are in deep discord” (al-Baqarah 2:176),
and His saying:
“Do not be like those who became divided and differed after clear proofs had come to them; such people shall suffer a tremendous punishment—on the Day when some faces will be bright and others dark” (Al-‘Imran 3:105–106),
and His saying:
“We took a covenant from those who say, ‘We are Christians,’ but they forgot a portion of what they had been reminded of, so We stirred up among them enmity and hatred until the Day of Resurrection” (al-Ma’idah 5:14).
