and they denied him. Then, when Muhammad was sent, they denied him too, and thus they returned with wrath upon wrath.
As the Exalted One said concerning them:
“Do you then believe in part of the Scripture and disbelieve in part? The recompense of those among you who do that is nothing but disgrace in the life of this world, and on the Day of Resurrection they shall be returned to the most severe punishment. Allah is not unaware of what you do.”
[Al-Baqarah: 85]
(85)
“They are the ones who have purchased the life of this world at the cost of the Hereafter; therefore the punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be helped.”
[Al-Baqarah: 86]
(86)
“Indeed, We gave Moses the Book and sent messengers in succession after him; We gave Jesus, son of Mary, the clear proofs and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. Yet whenever a messenger came to you with something your souls did not desire, you grew arrogant—one group you denied and another group you killed.”
[Al-Baqarah: 87]
(87)
“They said, ‘Our hearts are wrapped.’ No! Rather, Allah has cursed them for their disbelief, and little is it that they believe.”
[Al-Baqarah: 88]
(88)
“And when there came to them a Book from Allah confirming what was with them—and before that they had been praying for victory over the disbelievers—yet when there came to them what they recognized, they disbelieved in it; so may the curse of Allah be upon the disbelievers.”
[Al-Baqarah: 89]
(89)
“How wretched is that for which they sold their own souls: to disbelieve in what Allah has sent down, out of envy that Allah should send His grace upon whom He wills from among His servants! So they returned with wrath upon wrath, and for the disbelievers there is a humiliating punishment.”
[Al-Baqarah: 90]
(90)
“When it is said to them, ‘Believe in what Allah has sent down,’ they reply, ‘We believe in what was sent down to us,’ and they disbelieve in what came after it, though it is the truth confirming what is with them. Say, ‘Why then did you kill the prophets of Allah before, if you were indeed believers?’”
[Al-Baqarah: 91]
(91)
“Moses certainly came to you with clear signs; then you took the calf for worship after he had left, and you were wrongdoers.”
[Al-Baqarah: 92]
(92)
“And when We took your covenant and raised the Mount above you, saying, ‘Hold firmly to what We have given you and listen,’ they said, ‘We hear and we disobey,’ and their hearts absorbed the calf because of their disbelief. Say, ‘How evil is that which your faith commands you to do, if you are believers.’”
[Al-Baqarah: 93]
