Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-MasīhIbn Taimiya

Section: The believers are commanded to speak the truth so that proof may be established against the opponent.

Concerning His words, exalted is He:
“Do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in the manner that is best—unless it be against those of them who commit injustice—and say, ‘We believe in what has been sent down to us and what has been sent down to you; our God and your God is One, and to Him we submit.’” [29:46]

This verse instructs the believers to proclaim the truth that Allah has made obligatory upon them—and upon all people—so that they may thereby earn His pleasure and the proof may stand against those who dissent. Such is disputation in the finest manner: you state a truth that binds you and equally binds your opponent. If he agrees, harmony is achieved; if not, his obstinacy and wrongdoing are laid bare.

Allah, exalted be He, likewise says in another verse:
“Say, ‘Are you arguing with us about Allah when He is our Lord and your Lord? Our deeds are ours and your deeds are yours, and we are devoted to Him alone.’” [2:139]

We and you share the conviction that He is the Lord of us all, and that each person's deeds belong to that person, not to anyone else.
