—up to His words:

“That is because they opposed Allah and His Messenger, and whoever opposes Allah—Allah is indeed severe in punishment.” ⦗59:4⦘

Likewise, His saying—exalted be He—“and we submit to Him” ⦗29:46⦘ in al-ʿAnkabūt is the same as His saying, “and we submit to Him” ⦗2:133⦘ in al-Baqarah, together with their call to Islam.

The same meaning appears in Sūrat Āl ʿImrān where He says:

“Say, ‘People of the Scripture, come to a word that is just between us and you: that we worship none but Allah, associate nothing with Him, and that none of us take others as lords besides Allah. If they turn away, then say, “Bear witness that we are Muslims.”’” ⦗3:64⦘

Thus, he first invited them to Islam—that is, to worship Allah alone, without partner, and not to take one another as lords instead of Allah—just as He, exalted is He, said:

“They have taken their rabbis and monks as lords apart from Allah, and also the Messiah son of Mary, though they were commanded to worship only one God. There is no god but Him; exalted is He above what they associate.” ⦗9:31⦘

Then He, exalted is He, said:

إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: {ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ شَاقُّوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَمَنْ يُشَاقِّ اللَّهَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ} [الحشر: ٤] . وَقَوْلُهُ - تَعَالَى -: {وَنَحْنُ لَهُ مُسْلِمُونَ} [البقرة: ١٣٣] فِي الْعَنْكَبُوتِ فَهُوَ مِثْلُ قَوْلِهِ: {وَنَحْنُ لَهُ مُسْلِمُونَ} [البقرة: ١٣٣] فِي الْبَقَرَةِ مَعَ دُعَائِهِمْ إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ، وَكَذَلِكَ فِي سُورَةِ آلِ عِمْرَانَ فِي قَوْلِهِ: {قُلْ يَاأَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ تَعَالَوْا إِلَى كَلِمَةٍ سَوَاءٍ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمْ أَلَّا نَعْبُدَ إِلَّا اللَّهَ وَلَا نُشْرِكَ بِهِ شَيْئًا وَلَا يَتَّخِذَ بَعْضُنَا بَعْضًا أَرْبَابًا مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَقُولُوا اشْهَدُوا بِأَنَّا مُسْلِمُونَ} [آل عمران: ٦٤] . فَقَدْ دَعَاهُمْ أَوَّلًا إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ، وَهُوَ عِبَادَةُ اللَّهِ وَحْدَهُ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَنْ لَا يَتَّخِذَ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضًا أَرْبَابًا مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ، كَمَا قَالَ - تَعَالَى -: {اتَّخَذُوا أَحْبَارَهُمْ وَرُهْبَانَهُمْ أَرْبَابًا مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ وَالْمَسِيحَ ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ وَمَا أُمِرُوا إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوا إِلَهًا وَاحِدًا لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ سُبْحَانَهُ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ} [التوبة: ٣١] . ثُمَّ قَالَ - تَعَالَى -:
