Islam, and they all commanded their children to adhere to Islam. Thereafter He said:
“They said, ‘Be Jews or Christians and you will be guided.’ Say, ‘Rather, the creed of Abraham, unswervingly upright, and he was never one of the polytheists.’” ⦗2:135⦘
He then said:
“Say, ‘We believe in Allah, in what has been sent down to us, in what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes; in what Moses and Jesus were given; and in what the prophets were given from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we submit.’” ⦗2:136⦘
Then He said:
“So if they believe in the same as you believe, they are rightly guided; but if they turn away, they are only entrenched in hostility. Allah will suffice you against them, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.” ⦗2:137⦘
He has thus informed that if they turn away from believing in what you believe—a belief that includes your declaration, ‘and to Him we submit’—then they are merely in schism, that is, in opposition to Allah and His Messenger, just as He, exalted is He, said:
“He is the One who expelled those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture from their homes at the first gathering. You never thought they would depart, and they themselves thought their fortresses would protect them from Allah. But Allah came upon them from where they did not expect and cast terror into their hearts; they destroyed their houses with their own hands and with the hands of the believers. So take heed, O people of insight.” ⦗59:2⦘
