Their objection is: “He did not say, ‘Be muslimīn (submitters) to Him,’ but rather only said, ‘and we…,’” meaning “we”—that is, he himself and the Arabs who follow him—and in reference to what he has brought and what appears in his Book.
It may be said to them: This claim and all that resembles it comes from someone who has not understood the Quran—indeed, who fails to grasp even ordinary human speech. For once it is known of the author of a book—whether he says it is revealed from Allah or that he himself composed it—that he calls a people through many clear statements and obvious, manifest actions, his falling silent about inviting them in certain wordings does not negate his general invitation.
Furthermore, if he speaks with wisdom, then his silence about inviting them in particular situations serves a purpose suited to that context. Such is the case with the Almighty’s words:
“Say, ‘Do you argue with us about Allah while He is our Lord and your Lord? Our deeds belong to us and your deeds belong to you, and we are devoted to Him alone.’” ⦗Qur’an 2:139⦘
