And similarly, He—exalted be He—says:

“Say, ‘Will you dispute with us about Allah while He is our Lord and your Lord? Our deeds are ours and your deeds are yours, and we are devoted to Him alone.’” ⦗al-Baqarah 2:139⦘.

Likewise His words:

“Say, O disbelievers (1)
I do not worship what you worship (2)
Nor do you worship what I worship (3)
And I will never be a worshipper of what you worship (4)
Nor will you ever be worshippers of what I worship (5)
To you your religion, and to me mine.” ⦗al-Kāfirūn 109:1-6⦘.

This declaration is like His saying:

“For me are my deeds and for you are your deeds; you are innocent of what I do, and I am innocent of what you do.” ⦗Yūnus 10:41⦘.

It is a statement that establishes his disavowal of their deeds and their disavowal of his deeds, for the preposition lām in Arabic denotes exclusivity. Hence His words:

“To you your religion, and to me mine.” ⦗al-Kāfirūn 109:6⦘

indicate that you are exclusively bound to your religion, in which I have no share, and I am exclusively bound to my religion, in which you have no share—just as He said:

“For me are my deeds and for you are your deeds; you are innocent of what I do, and I am innocent of what you do.” ⦗Yūnus 10:41⦘.

وَمِثْلُهُ قَوْلُهُ - تَعَالَى -: {قُلْ أَتُحَاجُّونَنَا فِي اللَّهِ وَهُوَ رَبُّنَا وَرَبُّكُمْ وَلَنَا أَعْمَالُنَا وَلَكُمْ أَعْمَالُكُمْ وَنَحْنُ لَهُ مُخْلِصُونَ} [البقرة: ١٣٩] . وَكَذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُ: {قُلْ يَاأَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ} [الكافرون: ١] (١) {لَا أَعْبُدُ مَا تَعْبُدُونَ} [الكافرون: ٢] (٢) {وَلَا أَنْتُمْ عَابِدُونَ مَا أَعْبُدُ} [الكافرون: ٣] (٣) {وَلَا أَنَا عَابِدٌ مَا عَبَدْتُمْ} [الكافرون: ٤] (٤) {وَلَا أَنْتُمْ عَابِدُونَ مَا أَعْبُدُ} [الكافرون: ٥] (٥) {لَكُمْ دِينُكُمْ وَلِيَ دِينِ} [الكافرون: ٦] . فَإِنَّ هَذِهِ الْكَلِمَةَ كَقَوْلِهِ: {لِي عَمَلِي وَلَكُمْ عَمَلُكُمْ أَنْتُمْ بَرِيئُونَ مِمَّا أَعْمَلُ وَأَنَا بَرِيءٌ مِمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ} [يونس: ٤١] . وَهِيَ كَلِمَةٌ تُوجِبُ بَرَاءَتَهُ مِنْ عَمَلِهِمْ وَبَرَاءَتَهُمْ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ فَإِنَّ حَرْفَ اللَّامِ فِي لُغَةِ الْعَرَبِ يَدُلُّ عَلَى الِاخْتِصَاصِ، فَقَوْلُهُ: {لَكُمْ دِينُكُمْ وَلِيَ دِينِ} [الكافرون: ٦] . يَدُلُّ عَلَى أَنَّكُمْ مُخْتَصُّونَ بِدِينِكُمْ لَا أُشْرِكُكُمْ فِيهِ، وَأَنَا مُخْتَصٌّ بِدِينِي لَا تُشْرِكُونِي فِيهِ، كَمَا قَالَ: {لِي عَمَلِي وَلَكُمْ عَمَلُكُمْ أَنْتُمْ بَرِيئُونَ مِمَّا أَعْمَلُ وَأَنَا بَرِيءٌ مِمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ} [يونس: ٤١] .
