And He, the Most High, also said:

“Indeed, We revealed to you just as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him. We revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron and Solomon, and We gave David the Psalms; and [there were] messengers We have already told you about, and messengers We have not told you about. And Allah spoke to Moses directly—[sending] messengers as bearers of glad tidings and warners, so that mankind would have no argument against Allah after the messengers.” (al-Nisāʾ 4:163)

What is meant here is the religious commissioning that Allah loves and approves: the mission through which He guided those who followed the messengers and admitted them into His mercy, while He punished those who disobeyed them and made them deserving of torment. It is the sending that obligates obedience to the one who is sent, as He, the Exalted, said:

“We sent no messenger except that he should be obeyed—by Allah’s leave.” (al-Nisāʾ 4:64)

And He said:

“Whoever obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allah.” (al-Nisāʾ 4:80)

This is the very message by which He established proof against the creation, as He, Most High, said:

“Messengers bearing glad tidings and warnings, so that people would have no argument against Allah after the messengers.” (al-Nisāʾ 4:165)

And He, Exalted is He, said:

“Allah chooses messengers from among the angels and from among humankind.” (al-Ḥajj 22:75)
