Then He went on to speak of how those who were given the Scripture split up, just as the Jews and the Christians splintered—both within the Jewish sects and within the Christian sects such as the Nestorians, the Jacobites, and the Melkites.
He said:
“Indeed, those who inherited the Scripture after them” [al-Shūrā 42:14]—those very people who had divided—“are surely in unsettling doubt about it.” [al-Shūrā 42:14]
And so the great majority of Jews and Christians are, to this day, in that same disquieting doubt.
The Exalted also said:
“We certainly gave Moses the Book, but it was disputed; and had it not been for a prior word from your Lord, the matter would have been decided between them. Yet they are, concerning it, in disturbing doubt.” [Fussilat 41:45] (45)
And He—Most High—said:
“They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; it only appeared so to them. Indeed, those who differ over him are in doubt about it. They possess no knowledge of it, following only conjecture. They most certainly did not kill him.” [al-Nisāʾ 4:157] (157)
“Rather, Allah raised him to Himself; Allah is ever Mighty, Wise.” [al-Nisāʾ 4:158] (158)
