They exclaimed, “Glory be to Allah the Majestic! If the scripture they hold in their hands—written in a single language—cannot be altered, nor can even one letter of it be changed, then how could our own scriptures be tampered with when they are written in seventy-two languages, with in each language so-and-so many thousands of copies, and when they remained in circulation for more than 600 years before the coming of Muhammad? These texts were constantly in people’s hands, read in their various tongues across their far-flung lands.

Who could possibly speak in seventy-two languages? Who could exercise authority over the whole world—over its kings, its bishops, and the great majority of its inhabitants—so as to rule all of them in every region of the earth, gather them from the four corners of the globe, and then alter the text?

Even if someone were to change part of it while leaving another part untouched, that too is impossible, for the entire work is a single discourse and a single wording in every language. Such a claim is something no one may rightfully make—ever.”
