they also disbelieved, once he had been sent, in what was revealed to him. Allah—exalted is He—says:
“Those who said, ‘Allah has made a covenant with us that we are not to believe in any messenger unless he brings us an offering consumed by fire.’ Say, ‘Messengers before me did come to you with clear proofs and with what you now demand, so why did you kill them if you are truthful?’” ⦗Qur’an, 3:183⦘
He, the Exalted, says as well:
“If they reject you, messengers before you were likewise rejected; they came with clear proofs, with scriptures, and with the enlightening Book.” ⦗Qur’an, 3:184⦘
And He, the Exalted, says:
“When the truth came to them from Us, they said, ‘Why has he not been given the like of what was given to Moses?’ Did they not previously disbelieve in what was given to Moses? They said, ‘Two kinds of sorcery supporting each other,’ and they said, ‘We reject them both.’ Say, ‘Then bring a book from Allah that offers better guidance than these two, and I will follow it, if you are truthful.’” ⦗Qur’an, 28:48–49⦘
Given all this, He—glory be to Him—rebukes them for failing to follow what He revealed in the Torah and the Gospel, and for failing to follow what He revealed in the Qur’an, thereby exposing their disbelief in both the first Book and the second. In none of these passages does He instruct them to judge by the abrogated rulings of the first Book, just as He does not instruct them to judge by what has been abrogated in the second.
