Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-MasīhIbn Taimiya

Likewise, Moses—peace be upon him—was commanded to observe the Sabbath and was forbidden what Allah had prohibited in the Torah; in doing so he was following only what Allah—mighty and majestic is He—had revealed. The Messiah, Jesus, then declared lawful some of what Allah had forbidden in the Torah, yet he too was adhering to what Allah—mighty and majestic is He—had revealed. Thus, when Allah commands the people of the Torah and the Gospel to judge by what He has sent down, He is not instructing them to enforce rulings that He has abrogated; just as, when He commands the people of the Quran to judge by what He has sent down, He is not obliging them to apply what He has abrogated. Whenever an abrogating (nāsikh) and an abrogated (mansūkh) ruling both exist, the revelation requires judgment according to the abrogating ruling alone. Whoever judges by the abrogated ruling has judged by something other than what Allah—mighty and majestic is He—has revealed.

One of the verses that clarifies this is the Most High’s statement:

“Say, O People of the Scripture, you have no ground to stand upon until you uphold the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been sent down to you from your Lord. Yet what has been sent down to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in rebellion and disbelief; so do not grieve over the disbelieving people.” ⦗al-Māʾidah 68⦘

This makes plain that Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was commanded to say to the People of the Book to whom he was sent that they have no standing until they establish the Torah, the Gospel, and whatever has been revealed to them from their Lord. It follows, therefore, that they still possess scriptures known to be revealed by Allah and that they are commanded to uphold them, for that is among the matters
