al-ʿAlāʾ told us: ʿUbaydullāh ibn Mūsā, from ʿAlī ibn Ṣāliḥ, from Simāk ibn Ḥarb, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, reported:

“Qurayzah and al-Naḍīr dealt with one another as follows—al-Naḍīr enjoyed the higher standing. Thus, if a man from Qurayzah killed a man from al-Naḍīr, he was executed in retaliation; but if a man from al-Naḍīr killed a man from Qurayzah, the blood money was set at one hundred wasq of dates.

When the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was sent, a man from al-Naḍīr killed a man from Qurayzah. Qurayzah demanded, “Hand him over to us so we can execute him.” Al-Naḍīr replied, “Muhammad will judge between us and you.” They therefore went to him, and the verse was revealed…”
