from among the Jews.”
As for the Sunan compilations, Abu Dawud records—through Zayd ibn Aslam, from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both)—that he said:
“A group of Jews came and invited the Messenger of Allah—Allah bless him and grant him peace—to al-Quff. He went to them in their Bayt al-Midras (schoolhouse), and they said, ‘Abu’l-Qasim, one of our men has committed adultery with a woman; so pass judgment between them.’ They set a cushion before the Messenger of Allah—Allah bless him and grant him peace—and he sat on it.
He then said, ‘Bring me the Torah.’ When it was brought, he removed the cushion from beneath him, placed the Torah upon it, and declared, ‘I believe in you and in the One who revealed you.’
He then said, ‘Bring me the most learned among you.’ They brought a young man, and he went on to relate the account of the stoning.”
