Al-Bukhārī likewise records from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar that he said:
“A Jewish man and a Jewish woman who had committed adultery were brought to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He went to the Jews and asked, ‘What ruling do you find in the Torah for the one who commits adultery?’ They replied, ‘We blacken their faces and parade them publicly.’ He said, ‘Bring the Torah and recite it, if you are truthful’ (Āl ʿImrān 3:93). They brought it and began to read, and when they reached the verse on stoning, the young man who was reciting placed his hand over it and read what came before and after it. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Salām, who was with the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said, ‘Tell him to lift his hand.’ He lifted it, and there beneath it was the verse on stoning. They said, ‘You have spoken the truth; the verse on stoning is there, but we conceal it among ourselves, and our rabbis have replaced it with darkening the face and flogging.’ The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then ordered that the two of them be stoned, and they were stoned.”
Muslim also reports, on the authority of al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib—may Allah be pleased with him—that he said:
“A Jewish man whose face had been blackened and who had been flogged was made to pass by the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He called them and asked, ‘Is this how you find the legal penalty for an adulterer in your Book?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ He then summoned one of their scholars and said, ‘I adjure you by Allah who revealed the Torah to…’”
