Moreover, it has become evident that Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him—did not endorse anything of their altered and abrogated religion. Rather, he affirmed the earlier prophets and what they brought, and he commended those who followed them, not those who opposed them or denied any prophet. The unbelief of the Christians is, in fact, of the same kind as the unbelief of the Jews: the Jews corrupted the meanings of the first Scripture and rejected the second—namely, the Gospel—while the Christians likewise distorted the meanings of the first Book, the Torah and the Gospel, and then rejected the second Book, which is the Qur’an. Yet they allege that Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him—confirmed every single wording of the scriptures they possess.

The majority of Muslims categorically deny this claim, maintaining that some of those wordings have been altered just as many of their meanings have been altered. Other Muslims hold that the alteration took place only in the meanings and not in the wording itself—a position that most Jews and Christians themselves acknowledge. On either view, the Christians have no basis for claiming that Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him—approved the false religion they practice, for the divine books in their hands do not substantiate the doctrines for which Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him—and his community declared them disbelievers: the Trinity, the claimed union of the divine and human, indwelling, the abrogation of Christ’s law, or the denial of Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him. Nothing in the books they possess—explicitly or implicitly—attests to the Creed that is the cornerstone of their faith, with its doctrines of Trinity, union, and indwelling, nor do those books provide evidence for the greater part of their legal prescriptions.
