Section: Refuting Their Claim that the Qur’an Endorses the Scriptures Now in Their Possession
They say, “This establishes the authenticity of what we have, and the Qur’an’s confirmation of it removes every accusation of tampering, alteration, or distortion from our Gospel and from the rest of the books in our hands.”
We reply: The argument you advance here and elsewhere is either sheer falsehood or a mixture in which you have blended truth with falsehood. When you claim that the Qur’an “confirms” them, if by that you mean it confirms the Torah, the Gospel, and the Psalms that Allah revealed to His prophets, then this is beyond dispute. The Qur’an states this in more than one place, and Allah has made it obligatory for His servants to believe in every book He has sent down and in every prophet He has commissioned. He also informs us that He revealed those scriptures before the Qur’an, and that He sent down the Qur’an as a confirmer of the Scripture that preceded it and as a guardian over it.
Allah, the Exalted, says:
“Alif–Lam–Meem. Allah—there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer. He has sent down to you the Book in truth, confirming what came before it, and He sent down the Torah and the Gospel beforehand as guidance for mankind, and He sent down the Criterion.” ⦗Al ʿImran 1–4⦘
And He says:
“We have sent down to you the Book in truth, confirming the Scripture that came before it and as a guardian over it.” ⦗Al-Ma’idah 48⦘
