And He—exalted be He—has said:

“O you who have been given the Scripture, believe in what We have sent down, confirming what is already with you, before We efface faces and turn them backward, or curse them as We cursed the Sabbath-breakers. Allah’s command is ever accomplished.” ⦗al-Nisāʾ: 47⦘

Here, the designation “People of the Book” is more clearly directed at the Jews than at the Christians, because He mentions the curse upon those who violated the Sabbath. The same applies to His words:

“A group among the People of the Book said, ‘Believe in what has been revealed to the believers at the beginning of the day, and reject it at its end, so that they might return.’ ” ⦗Āl ʿImrān: 72⦘

This verse reports about a faction of Jews who made that statement. He—exalted be He—also says:

“O you who believe, if you obey a party of those who were given the Scripture, they will turn you back—after your faith—into disbelievers.” ⦗Āl ʿImrān: 100⦘
