Moreover, the Torah is greater than the Gospel, and Allah has made it plain that He has not sent down any scripture more guiding than the Torah and the Qur’an. He, exalted is He, says:

“They say, ‘Why has he not been given the like of what Moses was given?’ Did they not previously deny what Moses was given? They claim, ‘Two works of sorcery supporting each other,’ and they add, ‘We reject both of them.’ Say, ‘Then bring a Book from Allah that offers better guidance than these two, and I will follow it, if you are truthful.’” ⦗al-Qasas: 48⦘

(It is also recited: “two sorcerers supporting each other.”)

This is a challenge to them to produce a Book from Allah that is more guiding than those two, just as He says: “Or do they say, ‘He has fabricated it’? Say, ‘Produce a single surah like it.’” ⦗Yūnus: 38⦘.

The verse clearly shows that neither the Gospel nor the Psalms surpasses the Torah and the Qur’an in guidance. How, then, can the “illuminating Book” be taken to mean the Gospel alone, to the exclusion of the Torah and the Psalms?

Furthermore, whenever Allah—exalted is He—mentions the earlier scriptures, He singles out the Torah and pairs it with the Qur’an, as in His words:

“They did not value Allah as He deserves to be valued when they said, ‘Allah has not sent down anything to any human being.’ Say, ‘Who, then, sent down the Book that Moses brought— a light and guidance for mankind— which you turned into scattered parchments, showing some of it while concealing much? And you were taught what neither you nor your fathers had known.’ Say, ‘Allah [sent it down].’ Then leave them to wallow in their idle talk. And this is a blessed Book that We have sent down, confirming what came before it, so that you may warn the Mother of Cities and those around her. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in it, and they guard their prayers.” ⦗al-Anʿām: 91–92⦘
