Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-MasīhIbn Taimiya

to be punished, even if he has missed the truth, remaining ignorant of it and astray from it—like a mujtahid (qualified jurist) from the Ummah of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, who strives to reach the truth.

Accordingly, if it is said that the disciples—or some of them, or many, indeed most of the People of the Scripture—believed that the Messiah himself was crucified, then they were simply mistaken in that belief. Such an error does not undermine their faith in the Messiah, provided they accepted what he brought, nor does it make them deserving of the Fire. After all, the Gospels now in the hands of the People of the Scripture do contain a mention of the crucifixion of the Messiah, and they hold that these accounts go back to the four: Mark, Luke, and John
