—there is, by the joint testimony of both Muslims and Christians, no commendation whatsoever for the Jews’ altered and abrogated religion. In the same way, whatever praise the Qur’an contains for Jesus and the Gospel in no way extols those Christians who denied Muhammad, altered the rulings of the Torah and the Gospel, and chose to follow a creed that is both corrupted and abrogated. The Jews concur with the Muslims that these verses include no praise for the Christians, and the Christians concur with the Muslims that they include no praise for the Jews once abrogation and alteration had taken place.
Hence it is established that all the communities—Muslims, Jews, and Christians—agree that the Qur’anic references to the Torah, the Gospel, Moses, and Jesus do not praise the People of the Scripture who rejected Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—nor do they praise their altered religion before his mission. Accordingly, there is no commendation for anyone who adheres to a corrupted religion or to one that has been abrogated—much less for someone who clings to a religion that is both corrupted and abrogated.
