This, then, is weightier than what He says about the Gospel, for He states with regard to the Gospel,
“We gave him the Gospel wherein is guidance and light” ⦗Qur’an 5:46⦘;
and He also says,
“Let the people of the Gospel judge by what Allah has sent down therein; whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed—it is they who are the defiantly disobedient.” ⦗Qur’an 5:47⦘
Concerning the Torah, however, He says,
“By it the prophets who had submitted judged for the Jews” ⦗Qur’an 5:44⦘;
and, immediately after mentioning it, He declares,
“Whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed—it is they who are the disbelievers.” ⦗Qur’an 5:44⦘
Thus, while informing us that both scriptures were sent down, He—glorified be He—describes the Torah in terms more exalted than those He uses for the Gospel, as in His words:
“Indeed, We sent down the Torah containing guidance and light; by it the prophets who had submitted judged for the Jews.” ⦗Qur’an 5:44⦘
And if His praise of Moses and of the Torah did not thereby entail praising the Jews who rejected Jesus and Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—
