The term al-kitāb (the Book) is a generic designation for every scripture that Allah has sent down; it is not restricted to one particular book. The Exalted says: “Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west; rather, true righteousness is shown by the one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets.” ⦗Q 2:177⦘. Here He did not intend belief in a single, specific book; rather, the verse embraces faith in the Torah, the Gospel, the Qur’an, and every scripture that Allah has revealed. Likewise, He says in Sūrat al-Shūrā: “So to this call invite, and remain upright as you have been commanded; do not follow their desires. Say: I have believed in whatever Book Allah has sent down, and I have been commanded to deal justly among you.” ⦗Q 42:15⦘. Thus Allah, exalted is He, ordered him to believe in every book that He has revealed and to act justly among those to whom his message reaches, as He says: “that I may warn you thereby, and whomever it reaches.” ⦗Q 6:19⦘. Everyone to whom the Qur’an comes is thereby addressed; the discourse of the Qur’an applies to him. In the two Ṣaḥīḥs it is related that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “Convey from me, even if it is only a single verse.”
