“Adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs after me. Hold fast to it and bite onto it with your molars. Beware of newly introduced matters, for every innovation is misguidance.”
Al-Tirmidhi remarks: “This hadith is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (fair and sound).”
The sound texts, then, make it clear that monasticism is an innovation and a deviation; whatever is an innovation and a deviation is neither guidance nor something Allah prescribed—no more than He prescribed what the idolaters invented of the bahira, the saʾiba, the waṣila, or the ḥāmī.
