Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-MasīhIbn Taimiya

The view espoused by the Kufan scholars—reported from them by Ibn Jarīr, Thaʿlab and others—resembles His words:

“He admits whom He wills into His mercy, but for the wrongdoers He has prepared a painful punishment.” (al-Insān 76:31)

and His words:

“A party He guided, while for another party error became inevitable.” (al-Aʿrāf 7:30)

On this reading, therefore, ‘monasticism’ is not being coordinated with ‘compassion’ and ‘mercy.’

The second view, however, holds that it is coordinated with them—so Allah placed in their hearts compassion, mercy, and the innovated monasticism— and that this constitutes a creational decree
