Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-MasīhIbn Taimiya

—exalted be He—is not like anything else, neither in His essence, His attributes, nor His acts. Rather, He is described with every attribute of perfection and is utterly free of all deficiencies; no one resembles Him in any of His qualities. They affirm that He has always—and will always—possess these perfect attributes: He has eternally been speaking whenever He wills, by His own will and power; He has eternally been knowing, able, living, hearing, seeing, and willing. In short, every form of perfection that entails no imperfection and can possibly apply to Him is indeed His. He has never ceased, nor will He ever cease, to be characterized by the attributes of perfection and adorned with the qualities of majesty and munificence—glorified and exalted is He.

The Christians are among the most confused of all people concerning this fundamental truth. At one time they treat His speech—such as the Torah and the Gospel—as a created entity separate from Him, stripping Him of attributes altogether. At another time they regard His Word as something eternal and beginningless that issues from Him and never ceases, then claim that this Word is His Son, equate that Word with His knowledge or wisdom, and declare that this Word is a god, a creator who fashioned the heavens and the earth. They maintain that this Word is the Messiah, and that the Messiah is the deity who created the world.

Yet they also say that this Word is not the Father who created the heavens and the earth. Thus they make His Word an ancient, eternal attribute, call it His Son, treat that attribute as a god and creator, identify the Messiah with that creator-god, and still insist that he is “true God from true God, of the same substance as the Father.”

Regarding Allah’s speech and attributes they fall into contradictions and confusion, diverge from the words of the prophets, interpret those words in ways the prophets never intended, and end up in positions that flatly conflict with plain reason
