—for others likewise, in the reports they transmit from the prophets, are called “son,” and the Holy Spirit is said to have descended upon them. A fuller discussion of this appears elsewhere.

The purpose here is simply to draw attention to the fact that the words of the prophets—peace be upon them—confirm one another, and that the Christians possess neither a scriptural proof nor a rational argument that supports the innovations they have introduced. Instead, they have interpreted prophetic speech in ways that the words themselves do not indicate. In their own Gospel it is reported that he said: “Of that Day and Hour no one knows, neither the angels nor the son, but only the Father.” He thus made it clear that the son does not know the Hour, which shows that the son is not the eternal, pre-existent One but a temporal, originated being.
