Then the Exalted said:

{That is Jesus, the son of Mary—the word of truth about which they dispute.} [Maryam: 34] (34)

{It is not befitting for Allah to take a son. Transcendent is He! When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, “Be,” and it is.} [Maryam: 35] (35)

{Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord; so worship Him. This is a straight path.} [Maryam: 36] (36)

{Yet the factions differed among themselves; so woe to those who disbelieve from the witnessing of a momentous Day.} [Maryam: 37] (37)

{How clearly they will hear and how sharply they will see on the Day they return to Us! But today the wrongdoers are in manifest error.} [Maryam: 38]

Thus, glorified be He, related the story of Mary and the Messiah in this Meccan surah, revealed in the earliest days at Mecca, among the chapters in which He set out the fundamentals of the faith. Later, in the Medinan surahs—revealed when the delegation of the Christians of Najran came to him—He addressed those who had followed the prophets from among the People of the Book as well as the believers. Concerning them He, the Exalted, said:

{Indeed, Allah chose Adam, Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of ʿImran above all peoples} [Āl ʿImrān: 33] (33)

{as descendants, some of them from others; and Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.} [Āl ʿImrān: 34] (34)

{When the wife of ʿImran said, “My Lord, I have vowed to You what is in my womb in dedicated service, so accept it from me; You alone are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.”} [Āl ʿImrān: 35] (35)

{When she delivered her she said, “My Lord, I have borne a female”—and Allah knew best what she had borne—“the male is not like the female. I have named her Mary, and I seek refuge for her and her offspring with You from the accursed Satan.”} [Āl ʿImrān: 36]

In the Two Ṣaḥīḥs it is related from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—that he said: “Every newborn is touched by Satan, so he lets out a cry because of it…"
