And He—exalted be He—also said:
“O People of the Scripture, do not go to extremes in your religion and say nothing about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a messenger of Allah, His word that He conveyed to Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers and do not say, ‘Trinity.’ Refrain—it is better for you. Allah is but one God. Glory be to Him that He should have a son! To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and Allah suffices as Disposer of affairs.” ⦗Al-Nisāʾ 4:171⦘ (171)
“The Messiah would never disdain to be a servant of Allah, nor would the angels who are near. Whoever disdains His worship and acts arrogantly, He will gather them all to Himself.” ⦗Al-Nisāʾ 4:172⦘ (172)
“As for those who believed and did righteous deeds, He will give them their full rewards and increase them out of His bounty; but those who disdained and were arrogant—He will punish them with a painful punishment, and they will find for themselves, apart from Allah, no protector and no helper.” ⦗Al-Nisāʾ 4:173⦘ (173)
Likewise, they differ about the Messiah. The Christians say, “He is Allah,” and they also say, “He is the son of Allah—a complete god and a complete man.” The Jews, on the other hand, say he was born of adultery, the son of Joseph the carpenter, and they claim that Mary was an unchaste woman with regard to Jesus, as He—exalted be He—said: “and their uttering against Mary a monstrous slander,” ⦗Al-Nisāʾ 4:156⦘; and they declare that he was a lying sorcerer.
As for the Muslims, they say, “He is a servant of Allah and His messenger, His word that He cast to the chaste, virgin Mary, and a spirit from Him; he is eminent in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near.” They describe him only with what Allah has described him in His Book: they neither exaggerate about him as the Christians do, nor do they neglect his due as the Jews do. The same balanced stance applies to their view of all the prophets and messengers and of the friends of Allah. The Jews killed the prophets and those among the people who enjoined justice, while the Christians took their rabbis and monks as lords
