In the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections it is reported on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the verse

“Those who believe and do not mix their faith with wrongdoing” ⦗Al-Anʿām 6:82⦘

was revealed, it weighed heavily upon the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They said, “Which of us has not wronged himself?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “It is not as you suppose; it means idolatry. Have you not heard the words of the righteous servant, ‘Indeed, associating others with Allah is a grievous wrongdoing’?”

Because the followers of the prophets are people of knowledge and justice, the discourse of the people of Islam and the Sunnah with the unbelievers and the innovators is grounded in knowledge and justice, not in conjecture and the whims of the soul. For that reason the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Judges are of three kinds: two are in the Fire and one is in the Garden. A man who knows the truth and judges according to it will be in the Garden; a man who knows the truth yet judges contrary to it will be in the Fire; and a man who judges…"
