Ibn Saʿd relates in al-Ṭabaqāt:
“Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar narrated to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar, and Ibrāhīm ibn Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Ḥabībah told me on the authority of Dāwūd ibn al-Ḥuṣayn, who said: When the Messenger of Allah—may peace and blessings be upon him—reached the age of twelve, Abū Ṭālib took him to al-Shām with the trading caravan, and they halted with the monk.”
