ʿAmr) ibn Umayya al-Ḍamrī, from his household, from ʿAmr ibn Umayya al-Ḍamrī. Parts of one narration merged into another, and they said:
‘When the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—returned from al-Hudaybiyah in Dhu al-Hijjah of the sixth year, he sent letters to the kings, inviting them to Islam. Someone remarked, “Messenger of Allah, monarchs do not read a letter unless it is sealed.” Accordingly, the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—had a silver signet ring made that very day; its bezel was of the same metal, and he engraved on it three lines: “Muḥammad / Messenger / of Allah.” With it he sealed the letters.
Six envoys then set out on the same day—this was in Muharram of the seventh year—and by morning each of them was speaking the language of the people to whom he had been sent.’
