Muhammad is the Messenger of God—may God bless him and grant him peace—the claim that the Messiah is divine collapses, for the Prophet declared anyone who says, “He is God or the son of God,” to be outside the faith. Likewise, once it is confirmed that the Messiah is a Messenger of God, his alleged divinity is nullified, because to be God while simultaneously being the Messenger of God is inherently contradictory.
[Refutation of the Christians’ claim to the divinity of the Messiah, peace be upon him]
Their assertion that “he is God in respect of his lāhūt (divine nature) and a messenger in respect of his nāsūt (human nature)” is false on several grounds.
One of them is that the person who spoke to mankind was either God or the Messenger of God. If he was God, he could not also be the Messenger of God; and if he was the Messenger of God, he cannot at the same time be God.
For this reason, when the One who addressed Moses—peace be upon him—from the bush was God Himself, the scriptures did not describe Him as a messenger of God. This holds true no matter how they try to interpret the so-called “union” (ittihād).
It is common knowledge that people heard the Messiah speaking in his normal, recognizable voice; his voice never changed, nor did his physical state alter while he was speaking, unlike what occurs when a jinn possesses a person and then departs. When a jinn speaks through the tongue of a possessed individual, the difference between that person and others becomes evident: the possessed person’s condition and manner of speech are transformed, and words issue from him that he clearly does not know, while his conscious mind is absent to such an extent that
