categorically reject the notion altogether and question the authenticity of the story. Among them are those who say, “They only heard what he never uttered; the error was in their hearing, for it was Satan who whispered those words into their ears.”

As for those who deem the incident conceivable, they argue: once the matter was clarified and the words Satan had introduced were revoked, no harm remained. On the contrary, the very act of correction proves his truthfulness, trustworthiness, and piety, showing that he does not follow his own whims nor persist in falsehood—unlike the power-seeker who obstinately clings to his mistake.

If it is unobjectionable that verses whose divine origin is certain can be abrogated, then the abrogation of something like this is even more obviously free of objection. They cite in evidence the Almighty’s words:

“We never sent a messenger nor a prophet before you without Satan’s casting something into his recitation; yet Allah nullifies what Satan casts, then Allah perfects His verses. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise”

“so that He may make what Satan casts a trial for those in whose hearts is sickness and those whose hearts have hardened; the wrongdoers are indeed in deep dissent”
