man could speak Arabic with any fluency, nor did Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—understand discourse in any tongue but Arabic. For that reason the Exalted One said:
“The tongue of the one they hint at is foreign” ⦗al-Nahl 103⦘—
that is, they incline toward him and allege that he is the one who taught Muhammad—
“is foreign, whereas this is clear Arabic speech.” ⦗al-Nahl 103⦘
Likewise, some people said of the Quran:
“It is nothing but a fabrication he has concocted, and other folk have helped him with it.” ⦗al-Furqān 4⦘
Allah, exalted is He, replied:
“So they have come with wrongdoing and falsehood. And they say, ‘It is only the tales of the ancients which he has had written down; they are recited to him morning and evening.’ Say: ‘It has been sent down by the One who knows the secret in the heavens and the earth; indeed He is ever Forgiving, Merciful.’” ⦗al-Furqān 4–6⦘
Thus Allah—glorified be He—made plain that this claim is blatant, self-evident falsehood, recognized as such even by his enemies, let alone his followers, for they knew full well that no one was assisting him in any of it.
