and began kissing his head, his hands, and his feet.
When Addās returned, they said to him, “Woe to you, Addās! What makes you kiss that man’s head, hands, and feet?”
He replied, “My master, there is no one on earth better than this man; he has told me something that only a prophet could know.”
The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) then left Taʾif and headed back to Mecca, sorrowful that not a single man or woman had responded to him.
Zayd ibn Ḥārithah said, “O Messenger of Allah, how will you enter upon them after what they have done to you?”
He answered, “O Zayd, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will soon bring relief and a way out from what you see. Indeed, Allah will support His religion and make His Prophet prevail.”
عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُقَبِّلُ رَأْسَهُ وَيَدَيْهِ وَرِجْلَيْهِ،
فَلَمَّا رَجَعَ عَدَّاسٌ فَقَالَا:
وَيْلَكَ يَا عَدَّاسُ، مَالَكَ تُقَبِّلُ رَأْسَ هَذَا الرَّجُلِ وَيَدَيْهِ وَرِجْلَيْهِ،
فَقَالَ:
يَا سَيِّدِي، مَا فِي الْأَرْضِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ هَذَا الرَّجُلِ، لَقَدْ خَبَّرَنِي بِأَمْرٍ لَا يَعْلَمُهُ إِلَّا نَبِيٌّ.
ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنَ الطَّائِفِ رَاجِعًا إِلَى مَكَّةَ وَهُوَ مَحْزُونٌ، إِذْ لَمْ يَسْتَجِبْ لَهُ رَجُلٌ وَاحِدٌ وَلَا امْرَأَةٌ،
فَقَالَ لَهُ زَيْدُ بْنُ حَارِثَةَ:
كَيْفَ تَدْخُلُ عَلَيْهِمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَقَدْ فَعَلُوا وَفَعَلُوا،
فَقَالَ:
يَا زَيْدُ، إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ جَاعِلٌ لِمَا تَرَى فَرَجًا وَمَخْرَجًا، وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ نَاصِرٌ دِينَهُ وَمُظْهِرٌ نَبِيَّهُ.
