Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-Masīh - Ibn Taimiya - (1/386)

I can do nothing for you before Allah; the only thing you have with me is a tie of kinship, and I shall uphold that tie as best I can.

ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When the verse was revealed,

“And warn your nearest relatives” (al-Shuʿarāʾ 26:214),

the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood on al-Ṣafā and proclaimed, “O Fāṭimah daughter of Muḥammad! O Ṣafiyyah, aunt of the Messenger of Allah! O ʿAbbās, uncle of the Messenger of Allah! I possess no power to help you in the presence of Allah.”

Ibn Isḥāq said: When this verse was revealed, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, began calling out, “O sons of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib! O sons of ʿAbd Manāf! O sons of Zuhrah!”—enumerating the various sub-clans of Quraysh—then he declared, “Allah has commanded me to warn my nearest relatives, and I can do nothing for you before Allah except that you say, ‘lā ilāha illā Allah’ (there is no deity but Allah).”

At that, Abū Lahab said, “Is this why you have gathered us?”

فَإِنِّي لَا أَمْلِكُ لَكُمْ مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيْئًا غَيْرَ أَنَّ لَكُمْ رَحِمًا سَأَبُلُّهَا بِبَلَالِهَا» . وَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ: {وَأَنْذِرْ عَشِيرَتَكَ الْأَقْرَبِينَ} [الشعراء: ٢١٤] . «قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى الصَّفَا، فَقَالَ: يَا فَاطِمَةُ بِنْتَ مُحَمَّدٍ، يَا صَفِيَّةُ عَمَّةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ، يَا عَبَّاسُ عَمَّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ لَا أَمْلِكُ لَكُمْ مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيْئًا» . وَقَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ: «لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ جَعَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُنَادِي: يَا بَنِي عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ، يَا بَنِي عَبْدِ مَنَافٍ، يَا بَنِي زُهْرَةَ حَتَّى عَدَّدَ الْأَفْخَاذَ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: إِنَّ اللَّهَ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أُنْذِرَ عَشِيرَتِيَ الْأَقْرَبِينَ، وَإِنِّي لَا أَمْلِكُ لَكُمْ مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيْئًا إِلَّا أَنْ تَقُولُوا لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ» ، فَقَالَ أَبُو لَهَبٍ: أَلِهَذَا جَمَعْتَنَا؟
