he would dispatch someone to see what was happening. When they had all assembled around him he said: “Tell me: if I informed you that cavalry were advancing to launch a raid against you, would you believe me?” They answered, “Yes indeed. We have only ever known you to speak the truth; we have never known you to lie.” He said, “Then I am a warner to you before the coming of a severe punishment.”
Abū Hurayrah related: When the verse was revealed, “And warn your near relatives” (al-Shuʿarāʾ 26:214), the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, summoned Quraysh. They gathered, and he addressed them both collectively and individually, saying:
“O sons of Kaʿb ibn Luʾayy, save yourselves from the Fire! O sons of Murrah ibn Kaʿb, save yourselves from the Fire! O sons of ʿAbd Shams, save yourselves from the Fire! O sons of ʿAbd Manāf, save yourselves from the Fire! O sons of Hāshim, save yourselves from the Fire! O sons of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, save yourselves from the Fire! O Fāṭimah, daughter of Muḥammad, save yourself from the Fire!”
