—may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him—: “No prize money is to be offered except in a race of camels, a race of horses, or in archery.” Some narrator then inserted the words, “or in bird-flight,” when he noticed that one of the governors kept pigeons; the scholars immediately knew he had fabricated this addition merely to ingratiate himself with that governor.

Likewise, they are certain of the falsehood of anyone who claims that Musaylima and his people were believers in Allah and His Messenger and that al-Ṣiddīq fought them only because they refused to pay the zakat. They know by mass-transmitted evidence that Musaylima claimed prophethood and that his people followed him in this claim, and that, during the Prophet’s lifetime, he wrote:
“From Musaylima, the Messenger of Allah, to Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah.”
