—namely, “So how were My punishment and My warnings?” [Q 54:16] (16)

In other words: what became of My punishment upon those who denied My messengers? And how did My prior warnings, announced before the punishment arrived, confirm the truth of what the messengers had reported and manifest the retribution that befell those who called them liars?

He then recounts the case of the deniers—Noah, Hūd, Ṣāliḥ, Lot—until His words:

“Indeed, the warnings also came to the people of Pharaoh.” [Q 54:41] (41)

“They rejected all Our signs, so We seized them with a mighty, overpowering grasp.” [Q 54:42]

The people of Pharaoh rejected every sign shown by Moses, every sign brought by the prophets before him, and every sign pointing to the existence of the Lord, His power, and His will. They were stubborn disbelievers in the Creator, denying Him outright, and thus they rejected all His signs.

Then He says: “Are the disbelievers among you”—O community to whom Muhammad has been sent—“better than those [destroyed before you]?” [Q 54:43] (43)

i.e., those who denied Noah, Hūd, Ṣāliḥ, Lot, and Moses; “or do you have a writ of immunity recorded in the scriptures?” [Q 54:43]

“Or do they say, ‘We are a united host, bound to prevail’?” [Q 54:44]
