and therefore seeks neither cause nor underlying wisdom, but returns the whole matter to sheer divine will.
Allah, Exalted is He, says:
“Nothing prevented Us from sending the signs except that the former peoples rejected them.” [Q 17:59]
He knows that the hearts of these people are like the hearts of those earlier folk: they too would deny the signs and thus deserve the very punishment that befell the people of Noah, Hūd, Ṣāliḥ, Shuʿayb, Lot, and the others. He, Exalted, also says:
“Likewise, whenever a messenger came to those before them, they said: ‘A sorcerer, or a madman.’” [Q 51:52] (52)
“Have they bequeathed this attitude to one another? No—rather, they are a defiant people.” [Q 51:53] (53)
“So turn away from them; you are not to blame.” [Q 51:54] (54)
“But keep reminding, for reminding benefits the believers.” [Q 51:55] (55)
And He, Exalted, says:
“Those before them said the very same words; their hearts are alike.” [Q 2:118]
And regarding the People of the Book He says:
“They repeat the statement of those who disbelieved before.” [Q 9:30]
