Nor had he informed them that such a thing would occur only on the Day of Resurrection; therefore their remark, “as you have claimed,” is a slander against him—unless they intended it merely as an illustration, in which case their analogy is invalid.
As for their demand that he “bring Allah and the angels before us, face to face,” when the people of Moses asked for something less than that, the thunderbolt overtook them. The Exalted said:
“And when you said, ‘O Moses, we will never believe you until we see Allah openly,’ the thunderbolt struck you while you were looking on” [al-Baqarah: 55] (55),
“Then We revived you after your death so that you might give thanks” [al-Baqarah: 56].
With regard to their request that a book be sent down to them, the Exalted said:
“The People of the Book ask you to have a Book sent down to them from heaven. They asked Moses for something even greater than that, for they said, ‘Show us Allah openly,’ and the thunderbolt seized them for their wrongdoing. Then they adopted the calf after clear proofs had come to them; yet We pardoned them for that, and We gave Moses evident authority” [al-Nisāʾ: 153] (153),
“And We raised the Mount above them as We took their covenant, and We said to them, ‘Enter the gate in prostration,’ and We said to them, ‘Do not transgress on the Sabbath,’ and We took from them a solemn covenant” [al-Nisāʾ: 154] (154),
“So, for their breaking of the covenant, their denial of Allah’s signs, their killing of the prophets without right, and their saying, ‘Our hearts are sealed’—rather, Allah sealed them because of their disbelief, and so they believe only a few—” [al-Nisāʾ: 155] (155),
“and for their disbelief and their monstrous slander against Mary” [al-Nisāʾ: 156] (156),
“and for their saying, ‘We killed the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah.’ They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it was made to appear so to them. Those who differ about him are in doubt concerning him; they have no knowledge of him beyond conjecture, and they certainly did not kill him” [al-Nisāʾ: 157] (157),
“Rather, Allah raised him to Himself; and Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise” [al-Nisāʾ: 158] (158),
“And there is none of the People of the Book but will surely believe in him before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against them” [al-Nisāʾ: 159] (159),
“So, for the wrongdoing of the Jews, We forbade them good things that had been lawful for them, and for their turning many away from the path of Allah” [al-Nisāʾ: 160] (160),
“and for their taking usury even though they had been forbidden to take it…” [al-Nisāʾ: 161].
