had concluded a treaty with the people of Bahrain and had appointed al-ʿAlāʾ ibn al-Ḥaḍramī over them. Abū ʿUbaydah then arrived with a sum of money from Bahrain. When the Ansar heard of his arrival, they came to join the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—for the dawn prayer. After he had led them in the fajr prayer and departed, they positioned themselves in his path. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—smiled when he saw them and said,
“I imagine you have heard that Abū ʿUbaydah has brought something.”
They replied, “Indeed, O Messenger of Allah.”
He said, “Rejoice and look forward to what will please you. By Allah, I do not fear poverty for you; rather, I fear that the world will be spread out before you as it was spread out before those who came before you. You will compete for it just as they competed for it, and it will destroy you as it destroyed them.”
This narration is recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim in their Ṣaḥīḥs.

Al-Bukhari also related—from Bajālah ibn ʿAbdah—that he said:
“A written order from ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab reached us one year before his death: ‘Separate every mahram pair (those related by close kinship) among the Magians.’ ʿUmar had not imposed the jizyah on the Magians until ʿAbd—”
