the celebrated incident of the People of the Elephant took place that very year, and throughout the years of his upbringing numerous signs and proofs appeared on his behalf. A portion of these has been recorded in the works on the proofs of prophethood, the prophetic biography, and other sources—such as the marvels that befell his wet-nurse when he was placed in her care, and the extraordinary states observed of him during his childhood.
As for Allah’s granting victory to him and to his followers, exalting his name, spreading for him an enduring and truthful renown, destroying his enemies, humiliating all who oppose or resist him, and making his religion prevail over every other religion—by force of arm, by the tongue, and by clear evidence and proof—the details of all that would be far too lengthy to recount here.
The Exalted has said:
“There was certainly a sign for you in the two forces that met: one fighting in the cause of Allah and the other unbelieving. They saw them with their own eyes as twice their number. Yet Allah supports with His help whom He wills. Surely in that is a lesson for those endowed with insight.” (3:13)
He—Most High—also said:
“He is the One who expelled the disbelievers from among the People of the Scripture from their homes at the first exile. You never thought they would depart, and they thought that their fortresses would protect them from Allah. But Allah came upon them from where they did not expect, and He cast terror into their hearts. They were destroying their houses with their own hands and with the hands of the believers. So learn a lesson, O people of insight.” (59:2)
