and the plentiful water that came from the Hudaybiyyah well after they had drawn it completely dry—when not a single drop remained it surged back until the whole army drank their fill; and as the soldiers saw during the campaign of Dhāt al-Riqāʿ the scant water that Jābir poured into a basin, whereupon it brimmed over and every member of the army filled his vessel from it; and as the troops, on their return from Khaybar, witnessed the two water-skins carried by the woman: they filled every container they possessed and drank, yet the two skins were still as full as before.

Likewise, the people of Khaybar—one thousand five hundred in number—beheld the food about the size of a reclining sheep, yet it satisfied the entire army; and the great host at Tabūk—about thirty thousand men—saw the spring whose water was meagre swell until it sufficed them all, and they watched the food they had piled upon a leather mat, from which they kept taking until it met their need. In the same way the diggers of the Trench—more than a thousand strong—witnessed the abundance of food in Jābir’s house: it had been no more than one sāʻ of barley and a young goat, yet after their hunger every one of them ate to satiety and there was still some left over.

Eighty people likewise witnessed the multiplication of food when they ate in the house of Abū Ṭalḥah; three hundred saw the increase of water when they performed ablution from a single cup while water gushed from between his fingers until it was enough for them all; and at Zaynab’s wedding banquet three hundred guests ate from food served in a stone trough, and it was
