Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-Masīh - Ibn Taimiya - (6/322)

So I split it open and brought it to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He asked, “Where did you get this?” We replied, “We brought it with us from Madinah.”

Jābir continues: “We also had a companion we were equipping to go and graze our mounts. I prepared him, and he turned to leave for the herd wearing two garments that were badly worn. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, looked at him and said, ‘Does he not have two other garments besides these?’ I said, ‘Indeed he does, O Messenger of Allah—two garments in the saddle-chest; I had already given them to him.’ He said, ‘Call him back and let him put them on.’

“When the man went off, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, remarked, ‘What is the matter with him—may Allah strike his neck! Would that not be better for him?’ The man overheard and asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, in the path of Allah?’ He replied, ‘In the path of Allah.’ The man was later killed in the path of Allah.”

Abu Zurʿah transmitted the same report from Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān, from al-Layth, from Hishām ibn Saʿīd.

فَكَسَرْتُهُ ثُمَّ قَرَّبْتُهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: " مِنْ أَيْنَ لَكُمْ هَذَا؟ " قُلْنَا: خَرَجْنَا بِهِ مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ قَالَ: وَعِنْدَنَا صَاحِبٌ لَنَا نُجَهِّزُهُ يَذْهَبُ يَرْعَى ظَهْرَنَا. قَالَ: فَجَهَّزْتُهُ ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ يَذْهَبُ إِلَى الظَّهْرِ، وَعَلَيْهِ ثَوْبَانِ لَهُ قَدْ خَلِقَا، فَنَظَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: " أَمَا لَهُ ثَوْبَانِ غَيْرَ هَذَيْنِ؟ " فَقُلْتُ: بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، ثَوْبَانِ فِي الْعَيْبَةِ كَسَوْتُهُ إِيَّاهُمَا. قَالَ: " ادْعُهُ فَلْيَلْبَسْهُمَا " ثُمَّ وَلَّى يَذْهَبُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " مَا لَهُ ضَرَبَ اللَّهُ عُنُقَهُ، أَلَيْسَ هَذَا خَيْرًا لَهُ " فَسَمِعَهُ الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ؟ فَقَالَ: " فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ " فَقُتِلَ الرَّجُلُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ» . وَرَوَاهُ أَبُو زُرْعَةَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنِ اللَّيْثِ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ.
