Muslim relates—on the authority of Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ—that a man once ate in the presence of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, using his left hand. The Prophet said to him, “Eat with your right hand.” The man answered, “I cannot.” He replied, “May you never be able!” Nothing kept him from obeying except arrogance, and thereafter he could no longer raise that hand to his mouth.
Mālik records in his al-Muwaṭṭaʾ—from Zayd ibn Aslam, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Sulamī—who said: “We went out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the expedition of Banū Anmār. While I was resting beneath a tree, the Messenger of Allah came by, so I said, ‘Come here, O Messenger of Allah, into the shade.’ He dismounted and sat down. I then went over to one of our saddle-bags, rummaged through it, and found a small cucumber.”}
